THE SARADAR LEGACY

Since 1948, there has been a distinct lifecycle in the progression of Saradar Group’s structure, initially, starting from a local boutique bank and eventually turning into a diversified family-owned conglomerate with an international outreach.

Incorporation of Banque Marius Saradar,
a family owned business

1956

Incorporation of Banque Saradar SAL;
Banque Saradar earns a seat on the New York Stock Exchange.

1962

The management of the Saradar family
("Saradar Group") is passed on to Joe Saradar.

1987

Banque Saradar France is founded in Paris
in association with Le Crédit Chimique.

1992

Mario Saradar takes on the
managament of Saradar Group.

1998/2000

International Financial Corporation (”IFC”), a subsidiary
of the World Bank and Banque Nationale du Canada,
acquire minority stakes in Banque Saradar.

2004

Banque Audi and Banque Saradar merge
into the largest banking group in Lebanon.

2010

The Saradar family decides to focus on developing the family business, but remains one of the major shareholders of Banque Audi.

2011

Acquisition of a majority stake in Liban Post, the national postal operator in Lebanon.

2012

Acquisition of majority stake in Conseil et Gestion Immobilière ("CGI"), a lebanese-based real estate developer.

2013

I Acquisition of a controlling stake in the share capital of Near East Commercial Bank SAL (“NECB”).

II Acquisition of majority stake in CashUnited, a money transfer operator representing MoneyGram.

2014

Reverse merger between
Banque de l’Industrie et du Travail SAL ("BIT") and NECB.

2015

I Saradar Group finalizes and exits its remaining stake in Banque Audi.

II Saradar Group diversifies its investments and taps into
Europe through SFO’s first international real estate development investment in the UK (VI Castle Lane, London).

2016

I The merger between BIT and NECB
receives the approval of the Central Bank of Lebanon.
The new entity is named Saradar Bank.

II Saradar Group continues to diversify its real estate
investments and expands into Africa
(Cosmos, Côte d'Ivoire) and USA (Bay Vista, Seattle).

2017

Acquisition of a significant minority stake
in Vitas, a microfinance company,
by Saradar Bank.

2017

SFO launches the “USA Housing Program” with the acquisition of multi-family and student housing assets in Dallas, Kentucky, Houston and Atlanta.

2018

Acquisition of a Student-Housing portfolio comprising of more than 1,000 beds located in Florida and Texas

Chairman - CEO of Saradar Group

Following the merger between Banque Saradar and Bank Audi in 2004 and until December 2010, Mr. Saradar held the role of Chairman and General Manager of Audi Saradar Private Bank sal and Chairman of Bank Audi Suisse. Saradar Group went into a transformational phase under Mr. Saradar’s leadership where the family-owned business was gradually transformed into a diversified and institutionalized conglomerate.


Mr. Saradar is a seasoned banker and has repeatedly been elected to the Board of the Lebanese Banks Association, and is currently a member of the “Rassemblement des Dirigeants et des Chefs d’Entreprise Libanais”, the International Chamber of Commerce, and Young Presidents’ Organization.


Mr. Saradar holds a BS in Economics from University College in London, a diploma in Financial Instruments from “Institut des Techniques de Marché”, and a diploma in Portfolio Management from “Institut de la Bourse et du Titre”, both in Paris.

Mr. Carlos Ghosn became the most celebrated executive in France and Japan after successfully restructuring Renault, saving Nissan from a financial collapse and his current initiatives in reforming Mitsubishi.


Before he joined Renault, Mr. Ghosn was Chairman and CEO of Michelin N.A, where he managed Michelin's acquisition of the Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company in 1990.


Prior to that, Mr. Ghosn was the COO of Michelin S.A. in Brazil, Head of Research and Development for industrial tires, and plant manager in France.


Mr. Ghosn serves on the International Advisory Council of Tsinghua University in Beijing and the Strategic Council of Saint Joseph University in Beirut.


Mr. Ghosn holds Engineering degrees from École Polytechnique in 1974 and the École des Mines de Paris in 1978.

Mr. Andre Berard held the role of Chairman of the Board of National Bank of Canada from 1990 to 2003. He joined the Bank in 1958, and held various positions of increasing responsibilities throughout the years. Mr. Bérard became COO of National Bank of Canada in 1986, and assumed the duties of CEO from 1989 to 2002.


He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of BMTC Group Inc., The McDonald Stuart Foundation, Société Financière Bourgie Inc. and TFI International, Bombardier Aerospace and Tembec Industries. 


Mr. Bérard holds a Fellow's Diploma of the Institute of Canadian Bankers and has received two honorary doctorates from leading Canadian universities. Mr. Bérard also attended the Special Management Program at Harvard University.


Mr. Berard was made an Officer of the Order of Quebec (in 2000) and Canada (1995) for his "remarkable demonstration of his leadership qualities”.

Mr. Joe Saddi is the Senior Partner and Chairman of Strategy&'s Middle East business, with over 30 years of consulting experience in strategic, organizational and restructuring services.

Since joining the consulting industry in 1993, Mr. Saddi’s projects have covered policy formulation, corporate and business strategies, organization and governance. He has participated in and led multi-functional assignments on numerous continents in the public and private sectors covering water, oil, gas, mining, steel, automotive, consumer goods and petrochemicals, working closely with Middle Eastern governments, family-owned companies, national companies or large corporations.

Mr. Saddi completed his undergraduate studies at ESSEC in France and he earned an MBA from the Johnson School at Cornell University.

Mr. Joe Issa El-Khoury is an Executive Director and a member of the Investment Committee at M1 Group and the CEO of M1 Investments.

Prior to that, Mr. Issa-El-Khoury spent several years at Merrill Lynch in Paris, after which he joined the Méditerranée Group in Lebanon as advisor to the Chairman and Deputy General Manager of Méditerranée Investment Bank. He also served as Chairman-General Manager of Saradar Investment House, the investment banking arm of Saradar Group.

His multi-disciplined assignments covered areas in portfolio and wealth management, project finance, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, capital markets as well as real estate investments, which has made him an active leader in Business Development. Mr. Issa-El-Khoury was a pioneer in leading the first Euro Deposit program issued by a bank, the first convertible bond issued by an industrial group and the first REIT-like structure issued by a real estate company.

Mr. Issa-El-Khoury holds a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from the American University of Beirut and an MBA from INSEAD.

Mr. Mohamad Abouchalbak is the CEO of SFO. He has led the establishment of the Company’s principal investments and global advisory platform since joining in 2013. Over the last three years, Mohamad has successfully executed real estate and private equity investments amounting to more than USD500mn across the USA, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Prior to joining SFO, Mr. Abouchalbak was Vice President at GulfMerger, a GCC-based M&A advisory firm, where he advised on multiple cross-border transactions exceeding USD2bn in value. Mr. Abouchalbak also held senior positions at Jones Lang LaSalle.

Mr. Abouchalbak holds a Bachelor in Business Administration and Hospitality Management from the Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland. Mr. Abouchalbak sits on Saradar Group’s Executive and Investment Committees and is a board member of various portfolio companies.
